Dune grass is a type of seashore grass that grows very well in a seashore environment. What makes dune grass special (and what makes it so beneficial to the dune system on LBI) is the deep system of roots. These roots go a long way in stabilizing the dune system on Long Beach Island and help to prevent natural erosion by both wind and tide.
Beach Haven has planned a Dune Grass Planting on Long Beach Island New Jersey for October 12th 2013. This town wide project aims to accomplish the following:
- Plant 150,000 blades of dune grass
- Organize the planting street by street
- Assign a “street captain” to oversee the individual planting
Dune Grass Planting on Long Beach Island New Jersey takes place whenever it is needed and is funded mainly through local donations. The town wide event is organized and staffed by volunteers and is a very fun time for all who are involved! You will find a mix of helpers including local town residents, summer renters, local boy and girl scout troops and many others who simply wish to lend a hand!
