Flooring Options in the LBI Real Estate Market

There are a few styles of floors we commonly see on Long Beach Island, each with pros and cons. They are:

  • Hardwood floors
  • Carpet
  • Laminate flooring
  • Vinyl flooring
  • Tile
  • Bamboo

Hardwood Flooring is known for being a timeless and overall safe bet. It can be more expensive than certain types of laminate, vinyl, or tile flooring. It is important to have a durable finish on your floors to avoid scratches from the naturally sandy environment of LBI. That said, hardwood flooring is a common choice for main living areas in new or renovated homes, and can add a great deal of value to your LBI real estate investment. Carpet is a common time-tested choice for bedrooms, however it does have limitations on Long Beach Island.  Overtime and due partially to the moisture levels on LBI, carpet and the padding underneath can add a musty smell in a home. Additionally, it can be worn in the main living areas of the home, and make a negative impression when trying to sell in the LBI real estate market. However, it is a common alternative to hardwood floors. Laminate can be more durable than hardwood, and can give a customized and personal look to a space. It is important to remember that certain types of laminate are more prone to scratching, especially the less expensive options, and some laminate flooring can buckle when wet. The expensive laminates are less prone to scratching and can wear very well. With moisture being so high on Long Beach Island, this is something that should be evaluated prior to installation of any flooring. Vinyl flooring was a popular choice during the 1950’s through 1980’s, and is still used in some homes today. Generally, it is considered a less expensive alternative, and can be detrimental when selling a home. It can be remarkably durable, which can make it an attractive option for kitchens or bathrooms and rental properties. Tile may be considered one of the better options for kitchens, bathrooms, and even living spaces. It is durable, resists scratching from the sand, and can get wet. While it may be the more expensive option which may limit its use throughout a home, it can be surprisingly comparable in price to higher priced laminate and hardwood floors.
