Long Beach Island New Jersey LBI NJ is a barrier island located off the southern coast of New Jersey. Long Beach Island NJ is famous for its white sandy beaches, family-friendly atmosphere, and summer tourism industry. LBI is divided into six separate municipalities. They are:
- Barnegat Light
- Harvey Cedars
- Surf City
- Ship Bottom
- Long Beach Township
- Beach Haven
Unlike many shore towns on the coast of New Jersey, Long Beach Island New Jersey LBI NJ lacks a boardwalk instead centering the majority of amusements, restaurants and activity in the town of Beach Haven. The absence of a boardwalk gives LBI many quiet residential neighborhoods while still offering all the fun and excitement one would expect from a summer shore town. Long Beach Island has a number of excellent restaurants, exciting bars and nightclubs, amusement parks, water parks (including a wave pool!) and shopping while offering slower-paced activities such as historical sites, relaxing sunsets, and the famous Barnegat Lighthouse!
Long Beach Island NJ History
Long Beach Island was discovered in the 1600′s by Dutch explorers mapping the eastern coast of the United States. These Danish explorers left their mark on Long Beach Island in naming Barnegat Inlet and subsequently, Barnegat Light. The name, “Barnegat” is a derivative of a Dutch word meaning, “inlet of the breakers” which was bestowed upon Barnegat Inlet for its rough currents. of At that time, LBI was already being visited by local Native American tribes for its excellent hunting and fishing. During the 1800′s, true development began on Long Beach Island NJ with the first Barnegat Lighthouse being constructed on the north end of LBI and small summer cottages appearing on the Island. At about the same time, hunting lodgers began to appear springing the first true seasonal vacationers on Long Beach Island. The 1800′s also produced the railroad from Tuckerton to LBI which allowed travelers from New York and Philadelphia easy access to the shore town. This railroad, which roughly followed the same path as modern-day Long Beach Blvd., allowed for an explosion of commercial development including lavish coast homes and high-end hotels. LBI continued to grow during the early and mid 1900′s with many small communities growing as more and more people gained access to LBI. The development of the traffic bridge coupled with the surge in American’s owing cars made LBI a reachable destination from almost anywhere!
