Long Beach Island has been taking some important proactive steps to prepare the area for any future storms. The measures being taken will help to make LBI safer in the event of future disasters. These steps include an Island wide beach replenishment project, homes raised above base flood elevation and Long Beach Island Re-Entry Placards.

Long Beach Island Re-Entry Placard
Long Beach Island Re-Entry Placards are mailed to every household on LBI and are intended to permit area residents access after a mandatory evacuation.
- LBI Placards are color coded to allow entrance to specific areas only
- Placards must be hung from the mirror when accessing LBI and not having the placard will most likely deny access after an evacuation
- Placards are valid for five years and lost cards must be purchased
Placards are intended to allow homeowners access to LBI to secure their property after a disaster. They are not intended to allow owners to travel LBI and owners should not be outside their specified zone. Only one placard is issued per household so it is important not to lose it! Placards are numbered and registered to a specific home.
Hurricanes, Flooding and Long Beach Island
It is important to remember that Long Beach Island is a barrier island and it is subject to occasional flooding. While storms like Hurricane Sandy are rare, they have happened before and most likely will happen in the future. Proper preparation is essential to limiting the damage caused by any storm and having the ability to access LBI in the aftermath of a storm can go a long way to avoid further damage.
