Long Beach Township, the largest of the six municipalities on Long Beach Island, has instituted a town-wide ban on plastic bags. Under the current plan, the ordinance should go into effect around May or June of 2018. The ban on plastic bags is being hailed has an environmental win to keep trash and debris from spoiling the beauty that is Long Beach Island. The ordinance was passed with unanimous votes by Long Beach Township.

The ban will stipulate that shoppers must either provide their own re-usable bag or be charged a small fee for a recycled paper bag. This step will most likely draw some criticism from some local businesses as the single use plastic bags are far less expensive, but overall it is a good step for the environment and a positive change for Long Beach Island. It is important that both visitors and residents, as well as business owners, all be aware of this change. Other towns on Long Beach Island NJ, most notably Beach Haven with its high concentration of commercial businesses, are looking to implement similar bans on plastic bags. This is just one of many steps that are being taken to make Long Beach Island a better place to live and to visit. Other recent changes include new parks, concert events and off-season activities.
